February, 2020
Alpha Zeta met at Pleasant View UMC in Abingdon for our 2nd annual Soup's On! event.
Preparations started early, with hostesses Judy Y and Mary Sue S working alongside president Kathy M to get the soups and sides hot and ready!
Business before soup...
Thought for the Day...
Maureen M presented the Thought for the Day, a selection of ideas about leadership and living your fullest life.
Some of the thoughts she shared with us:
* The two most important days in your life are the day you were born, and the day you find out why.
* Always remember that it's better to try and fail than to live with regrets.
* To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream, not only plan, but also believe.
* Deal with your problems before they deal with your happiness.
* The meaning of life is to find your gift. The purpose of life is to give it away.

Leadership
Cindy B talked about the day's speaker whom she had heard at another conference. Unfortunately, Angie C was ill and unable to come.
President Kathy M talked about leadership. She will only be our president for two more meetings, and has been a fantastic leader. She said she's discovered that a good leader is evident in the enthusiasm and eager participation of the group she leads. Kathy says that when a group really comes together and accomplishes a goal, that's when you know that group has had excellent leadership.
There were quotes about leadership, followed by an activity in which we took some of the qualities of a good leader, found on our tables, and matched them with a sister. It's always good to recognize the amazing qualities you see in someone else. It's equally good to hear from someone that they see that quality in you.
For example, Teresa H (left) was told that her empathy was one of her most endearing qualities, and Judy Y (right) was complimented for her honesty.
Secretary's and Treasurer's report
Shirley S (left) does a marvelous job with the meetings' minutes. They were approved, of course! Judy Y (right) did her usual fine job with her report. We voted, among other things, to donate $50 to Pleasant View UMC for allowing us to meet in the Fellowship Hall.
Special guests
We were delighted to welcome Emma C, our 2019 Marion Stafford Scholarship recipient. Emma graduated in December and is currently working as a long-term substitute. Her mother (right), Valerie C, has been a well respected teacher for many years. Emma spoke about how the scholarship enabled her to pay off loans. She further said that she has very much enjoyed her placements from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Her positive attitude will surely pay off as she goes through this challenging, but rewarding career.
