Our November meeting was at The Family Bakery, in Gate City, VA.
It is one of our favorite places to meet; we love the food and the warm, welcoming ambiance that the owners have created. Everyone arrived with umbrellas and raincoats--brrr! Maureen (left) is placing programs, minutes, and copies of the collect on the tables. |
Carmen did double duty! She was one of our hostesses (left, with Mary) and provided our Thought for the Day. She read from John Perry Barlow's, "Principles of Adult Behavior." Everyone enjoyed Mr. Barlow's perspective on how adults should behave.

Our special guest was author, poet, and musician--
Rita Sims Quillen.
Ms. Quillen told about the inspiration for her latest novel, Hiding Ezra. Her husband's grandfather was one of many thousands of men who were drafted during WWI, but were faced with the knowledge that their families might not survive without them. He, like many others, chose a life as an outlaw so he could keep his family from losing everything.
The excerpts that Rita Quillen read had our Alpha Zeta sisters laughing out loud! Hiding Ezra (2014, Little Creek Books) is available in paperback or e-book. You will love it--especially the first-person anecdotes from Ezra's journal, told in his own special vernacular!

Maureen talked about the Friends of Education Award that will be presented in December to a deserving recipient from each of our three geographical areas. The letters of invitation have been sent. Be sure to attend the Christmas Social on December 5!
Additionally, the members of Alpha Zeta voted to start an online directory. Please take a selfie and send it to Judi Lenviel or Heidi McElroy. We'll also be happy to take your photo at the December meeting.

Sara, chair of the Rules committee, explained the proposed changes in Rules and Bylaws, including new chapter committees starting with the 2016-2018 biennium. The new changes will more closely align Alpha Zeta's bylaws with those of Iota State.
