Spring is nearly here!! Alpha Zeta had a rip-roaring good time at our March meeting, held at the Ladybug Café between Bristol, VA and Abingdon, VA.
Arriving...
Our hostesses for today, Theresa H and Carol P, did a great job, greeting everyone with smiles and collecting and counting the money for our delicious lunch.
With St. Patrick's Day just around the corner, Irish symbols and flags were EVERYWHERE! Many of the sisters sported green, as well.
Settling in...
There were lots of AZ sisters at this meeting; President Kathy M hated to break up the hugs and stories that people wanted to share!
Kathy called the meeting to order. Since our February meeting, Alpha Zeta lost two of our sisters, Sally Patterson and Sara Ellis. Kathy spoke about each of them, then we had a moment of silence in their memory and honor.
These Alpha Zeta members will be missed. Most of us became especially fond of Sara (R), who was our most recent president and whom we honored in the spring of 2019. She had a quiet, calm leadership style; she worked indefatigably for us and for her students. Her wit, her storytelling, and her unique style will be remembered for a long time to come. This chapter was indeed blessed with Sara at the helm.
Getting on to regular business...
Janice presented our "Thought for the Day." She spoke about the advent of spring and had us imagine that each small act of kindness, compassion, and love can be compared to a seed planted in the spring. She told us that our purposes are often fulfilled when one of those "seeds" fulfills its purpose of growing and reaching its full potential.
Hearing from our special speaker and Alpha Zeta member...
Alpha Zeta member and longtime educator, Jo S, talked to our group about her experiences teaching in both the USA and the United Kingdom. She has been a teacher, media specialist, and administrator. In the UK, Jo served as a substitute teacher, a regular classroom teacher, and as a head teacher. She shared so many anecdotes: from taking 30 eight-year-olds on a week-long field trip to learning how to punt on the Thames River. Her beliefs in the value of differentiated education and in project-based learning were very much in line with the kind of teaching she did and observed in England. Alpha Zeta is fortunate to have Jo as a member and resource!
Reporting...
Above: Shirley S (secretary) presented copies of her minutes, and Judy Y (treasurer) gave the treasurer's report. Carol S (right) read correspondence Alpha Zeta had received since February's meeting. Each of these officers does a fantastic job. They will be hard to replace!
Presenting prospective members...
Chair of the Membership Committee, Linda B, looks over her applications before presenting FIVE nominees. Each nominee is an outstanding woman educator and each was readily accepted for membership. We are so excited to have such worthy, accomplished candidates! These candidates will be inducted in May at the Gate City United Methodist Church.
Below: Mary Sue S and Carol P describe their candidates to the group. Each nominating member extolled her choice's accomplishments and how she would contribute to Alpha Zeta.
Discussing the slate of officers for 2020-2022...
Cindy B (left) talks with Kathy M, current president. The slate of officers was not ready to present at this meeting, but volunteers quickly filled most slots. The new officers will be inducted in Gate City at the May meeting.
